What else do I need?

In addition to diapers, you’ll want a few accessories to make cloth diapering successful.

Wipes

Cloth wipes are amazing. They are so convenient, instead of using store bought wet wipes. No need for an extra trash can by the changing area. No harsh chemicals on baby's most sensitive area.

Cloth wipes are more efficient than wet wipes so one or two wipes for a poopy diaper is usually enough.

We would recommend having about 30-40 wipes, depending on how often you wash diapers. One or two wipes per diaper change each day.

Diaper pail (with or without a pail liner) when storing dirty diapers between washes, airflow is key! No need for a traditional closed and sealed diaper pail to hold the stink away like with disposable diapers.

Our readers agree that regular washing and an open laundry pail (with holes) is your best bet to combat odor, mildew or ammonia. A cheap plastic open trash can or laundry pail from the dollar store works great. Some prefer to line it with a pail liner, for easier transfer from the pail to the washer. Others prefer to rinse the pail between laundry days and keep airflow better.

Wet bags / pods

Wet bags are waterproof bags often made of PUL, that store dirty diapers. Wet bags are great when you are out and about with your child. They are great for diapers and wet or dirty clothes or even to organize your diaper bag. Wetbags also come in handy for daycare, whether it is for cloth diapers or something totally different. Diaper pods are rectangular cube shaped wetbags, these are specifically great for delivering clean diapers to daycare for an example.

Wetbags come in many sizes, from fitting a single diaper to holding up to 20 or even more. Some caregivers choose to use a large hanging wetbag instead of using a diaper pail or pail liner.

Diaper cream

Not all diaper creams are made the same. If your child develops a rash, it’s great to have a cloth safe diaper cream on hand. Check our list of top rated cloth safe diaper creams.

Fasteners (snappi, pins)

If you use flats, snapless fitteds, preflats or prefolds a super fastener comes in handy. Snappi or the good old diaper pins are affordable and a great option.
